The Marienbad Gallery in Mariánské Lázně was a major success. The CzechTourism Agency and the Living Region project have officially included it among the "Undiscovered Gems of the Czech Republic 2026". This year, only three places were selected from the entire Karlovy Vary Region to be presented to the whole country as unique tourist and cultural destinations - and Galerie Marienbad is one of them.
This award confirms the extraordinary transformation of the space, which until recently was known primarily as a place for selling souvenirs. Today, it is a respected contemporary art gallery with an international reach, which is gradually establishing a firm place on the cultural map of the Czech Republic.
The entire gallery team is behind this transformation, but the curator Alena Mrovcová has played a crucial role. It is her sensitive, yet uncompromising approach to the selection of artists and emphasis on real quality that has helped to give the gallery a clear profile and bring it to the national selection of exceptional places.
Galerie Marienbad's programme focuses on contemporary art and features the work of artists with a distinctive artistic signature and a wider international reach. Visitors can also enjoy the exhibition space itself on the first floor of the main colonnade - the newly restored interior with its attractive 1970s architecture and 250 m² of exhibition space offers a unique setting for a powerful artistic experience.
Currently on display here until 13 May is an exhibition of the important Czech artist František Hodonský, featuring a selection of his paintings and sculptures. The exhibition focuses on the key themes of Hodonsky's work - the landscape of South Moravia, watercourses, floodplain forests and the changing energy of nature, which the artist captures in an expressive, sometimes even abstract artistic language. In addition to paintings, sculptures are also represented, underlining the artist's versatility, his feel for materials and his distinctive plastic thinking.
The Marienbad Gallery was reopened in the main colonnade in May 2025 thanks to the initiative of several enthusiasts. Karel Kalivoda and his team from Ensana, together with Marienbad entrepreneur and hotelier David Folprecht, played a key role in its revival.
"We are pleased to be able to offer visitors to our city quality art in the unique historical setting of the colonnade. The combination of 19th century architecture with modern art creates an unforgettable experience," comments gallery owner David Folprecht.
The inclusion of the Marienbad Gallery among the "Undiscovered Gems of the Czech Republic 2026" is not only an appreciation of the work of the entire team so far, but also a confirmation that Mariánské Lázně, alongside its spa tradition, also has an increasingly strong place in contemporary culture and art.
