The Grand Accordion Orchestra of Mariánské Lázně
The Grand Accordion Orchestra was founded in the school year 1962/1963 as part of the F. Chopin Elementary Art School in Mariánské Lázně. Its founder and long-time conductor was Mr. Alexandr Smutný, who led the orchestra until 2023. Under his leadership, the orchestra became a respected musical ensemble, ranking among the top in its category in the Czech Republic.
In 2012, the orchestra became independent and continued its activity as a separate ensemble. Today, it has around 30 members, including accordionists, a preparatory group, a rhythm section (electric piano, organ, bass, drums), a trumpet section, soloists on various instruments (e.g., xylophone), and vocalists. This rich and diverse sound provides the orchestra with wide interpretative possibilities, bringing the audience an extraordinary musical experience.
Throughout its existence, the orchestra has won several awards at international competitions and festivals and regularly performs at concerts and festivals both at home and abroad.
The year 2024 is pivotal for the orchestra: after more than six decades, Mr. Alexandr Smutný handed over the conductor's baton to his successor Jan Kubín, who now continues his legacy and tradition. Under his leadership, the orchestra is entering a new phase, continuing to develop its artistic activities and collaborations with young musicians.
