What was it like at the end of the war in Marianske Lazne? In April 1945, it became an infirmary town, and in addition to wounded German soldiers and patients from the Berlin hospital, there were also those fleeing from the Allied armies. The number of people in the town had reportedly risen to 40,000 from the original number of about 7,000. American troops under the command of General Patton arrived in the city on 6 May. Unlike other towns where they had to fight the retreating Wehrmacht, Marienbad was liberated without a single shot being fired. However, there were only dozens of Czechs, so there were no celebrations in the town 81 years ago.
The memorial to the soldiers of the American army was unveiled in Skalníkské sady in 1990.
