WBS: My Homeland – A gala concert to mark the anniversary of the founding of independent Czechoslovakia

Concert by the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra

A gala concert to mark the anniversary of the founding of independent Czechoslovakia will feature one of the most significant works in Czech musical history — Bedřich Smetana’s cycle of symphonic poems, *Má vlast*. This monumental composition, which has become a symbol of Czech culture, history and the bond with one’s homeland, will be performed by the West Bohemian Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its principal conductor, Michaela Rózsa Růžičková.

Smetana’s *Má vlast* was composed between 1874 and 1879 and remains one of the most evocative works in the Czech symphonic repertoire. The six symphonic poems weave together images of the Czech landscape, legends, history and national traditions. During the evening, the audience will journey from the legendary Vyšehrad, across the flowing Vltava and through the poetic Czech countryside, to the dramatic Hussite motifs in the final movements, ‘Tábor’ and ‘Blaník’. Bedřich Smetana’s music combines solemn power, lyrical beauty and deep emotion. The concert will thus offer not only an exceptional musical experience, but also a fitting commemoration of a historic anniversary and Czech cultural identity.
