Town Theatre

The first theatre performance in Mariánské Lázně was played in a provisional wooden pavilion in the open air. It might have been on 14th June 1820. In 1868 F. Zickler built the theatre building in the Neorenaissance style. In 1905 it was rebuilt according to the plans of the architect Walcher and got an Art Nouveau appearance. During the most successful spa seasons, i.e. at the beginning of the 20th century, theatre performances were given every day and the most distinguished actors from prominent theatres from all the world appeared on stage as guests. The first play in the Czech language was given here in 1945. The renovation took place between 1974-1977, 2001-2002.

Today there is 353 sitting places in the theatre. In the parterre 204, on the 1st balcony 97 and on the 2nd balcony 52.

We learn about theatre life in Mariánské Lázně in connection with Gustav Julius Mussik´s theatre company. It first established contact with the spa town in a newly founded provisional theatre in the summer season of 1852. The company consisted of 20 actors, mostly members of whole families, and a part of it was also an orchestra consisting of 20 musicians. The co-operation with Mariánské Lázně continued successfully between 1855 - 1866. There were dramas, "Singspiele" and operas in the repertoire of the company. Its last performance in Mariánské Lázně might have taken place in 1866 when the construction of a new theatre building was interrupted. In following years the company directed its attention at Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázně.

The tickets are available always 2 month in advance (on the 1st of March can be bought tickets for March and April). Reservation is valid 2 weeks. The reservation can be made also per e-mail.
